May 3, 2018 – Jordan states its support of Morocco severing ties with Iran, according to Amman’s top diplomat.
Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi sent a message in this regard emphasizing:
“We stand alongside our Moroccan brothers. We support Morocco’s decision in the face of threats against this country’s security and stability,” he said, further stressing on cooperation and solidarity between their two countries.
Morocco severed relations with Iran on Tuesday, announcing its embassy in Tehran will be closed in the near future.
Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita made the announcement and Reuters added Morocco will be expelling Iran’s ambassador from its soil.
It is worth noting that Rabat had in March 2009 unilaterally severed diplomatic ties with Iran. Morocco’s top diplomat at the time described that decision being based on “Iran’s unacceptable position against Morocco and meddling in this country’s internal religious affairs.”
The West Africa country has a population comprised of 99% Sunni Muslims.
Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain had previously lauded Morocco’s decision. This increasing regional isolation is adding to the international community’s growing concern over Iran’s belligerence in regards to its nuclear program, ballistic missiles and meddling across the Middle East.
With only 9 days left to the deadline set by the U.S. President Donald Trump on the fate of the Iran nuclear deal, a slate of countries and companies are already beginning to distance their relationships from mullahs' ruled Iran.
Tehran’s troubles are snowballing as we speak as the regime struggles to grip with a very restive populace.
