Iraqi MP: over 15,000 inmates in Iraqi government’s prisons

INTV, 2 Dec 2013 – Baghdad TV reported Iraqi MP Salim al-Jabouri, chair of the Iraqi Parliament Human Rights Commission, said 15,358 inmates are currently in the Iraqi government’s prisons, with some detained for more than two years without any certain accusation or verdict.
“Amongst these inmates are 1,072 women of which 399 are under interrogation. This is while the law does not permit any detained individual to be held for more than 48 hours without their status being finalized,” al-Jabouri added.
The chair of the Iraqi Parliament Human Rights Commission emphasized there are 516 under-aged individuals in the custody of Defense Ministry prisons.
Human rights organizations had revealed some time ago the number of inmates in Iraqi prisoners have surpassed the 100,000 count.
