
Based on the latest assessment published by the International Monetary Fund, in 2011 Iran had the sixth highest inflation rate in the world.
In 2012 amongst 175 countries, Iran has climbed up to having the fourth highest inflation, with only the three countries of White Russia, Sudan and South Sudan ranking higher. Of course on 2012 this remains a preliminary evaluation, with more accurate statistics to be published in two months’ time.
Based on the IMF review, amongst the 30 countries of the Middle East, North Africa, Central Asia, the Caucasian region and Pakistan, Iran is the record holder in inflation. This year it is forecasted that only Sudan will have a higher inflation than Iran.
Iran’s official inflation rate is announced at 26%. However, Majlis (parliament) members such as Ahmad Tavakoli consider inflation in Iran to be higher than 50%.
