Iran: More than 600,000 people are arrested and imprisoned annually

Iran official news agencies cite the director of the country’s prison organization as saying that more than 600,000 people are arrested and imprisoned annually. This is at a time where according to the prison officials the total prison capacity in the country is 80,000 to 118,000 inmates. But right now the country is holding 200,000 prisoners. Asghar Jahangiri the director of prison organization said with such surplus in the number of inmates, and while there are not enough rooms for the prisoners to sleep, we can’t say that any rehabilitation is ongoing.
He added that %25 of these inmates are held because the bail money is extremely high and the prisoner is unable to pay that bail. This has cost the country whole lot of money.
