VIENNA, Jan 16 (Reuters) – The U.N. nuclear watchdog on Saturday said Iran had put in place all nuclear measures required under a deal reached with six world powers in July, paving the way for crippling sanctions on the Islamic Republic to be lifted within hours or days.
“Iran has carried out all measures required under the (July deal) to enable Implementation Day (of the deal) to occur,” the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said in a statement.
CNN cited IAEA saying significantly this is a new chapter and new phase between the IAEA and Iran. And as part of the new phase Iran would have to enact what is known as the “Additional Protocol.”
This is very significant, CNN said. Because those additional protocols allow IAEA inspectors in Iran to say we would like to go and visit that site or the other site. This is done without the Iranian side necessarily declaring anything about this particular site. If the inspectors have reason to believe that there may be some activities going on at a certain location that is not within the agreement, then the inspectors would have the right to call to go and see what is going on. This is what Iran has signed up for.
The Director General of the IAEA saying this would begin a new phase of monitoring of this agreement.
CNN added that Iran’s uranium must remain below a certain limit for 10 to 15 years.
The Director General didn’t give all the details that Iran has now complied with, that should come in a separate confidential report.
