A drug-addicted woman was  arrested under a plan carried out by security forces aimed at rounding up all drug addicts from the streets in the city of Birjand, lost her life due to lack of attention by medical authorities in prison.
Fatemeh Nasseri was suffering from asthma and used medical sprays to help her breath. After her spray was finished her health deteriorated and prison officials paid no attention to her requests for help. The prison physician only came to see her one hour after she had already died.
“This individual was arrested by the security forces and sent to court. She was ordered to pay a fine but once again transferred to prison since she had no money to pay the fine,” a city official in Birjand said.
Previously this official had said a total of 72 drug addicts were rounded up in Birjand from late March to late June.
“Of this number 31 were male and 41 were female,” he added.
