Iran: daughter of dead prisoner speaks of her father

The body of political prisoner Shahrokh Zamani has been transferred to a morgue in Karaj. His family, confirming the death of this labor activist in prison, are calling for an investigation into his death and explanations from the authorities.
Nina Zamani, the daughter of Shahrokh Zamani, says her father had no physical health problems and her family is demanding an autopsy to clarify the reason behind the death.
She says her father was deprived of any leave from prison for 4 years, and during the past 3 years he was also deprived of a visit in prison. And now, his death has been confirmed by prison authorities while he was suffering from no physical problems at all to be the cause of his death, she added.
“This afternoon we had a call about his death. We went to Rajaie Shahr Prison where he was held. They said he has been transferred to the Bibi Sakine Morgue in Karaj (west of Tehran). We went there and they confirmed that they had received his body. Arrangements were made for us to follow up with our complaints the next morning and an autopsy to clarify exactly why he had died,” Nina Zamani said.

“They didn’t give my father even one day of leave from prison. In February my grandmother died and they still didn’t give him a leave. My grandmother became ill as she was so worried about my father, she then was diagnosed with cancer and passed away. I myself even went to follow up on leave for him. They didn’t permit it. We couldn’t even go visit my father in prison. Ever since they took my father to Rajaie Shahr Prison, during these past three years we didn’t have any visits and he was never granted leave from prison,” she added.
“My father truly died in complete innocence. He was under immense cruelty during the 4 years that he was in prison. He couldn’t even say farewell to his own mother. I even got married during period and he couldn’t come for my wedding. They will never be able to silence those like my father. They will die but their spirits will live and their path will be continued,” Nina concluded.
