Iran: A high-ranking police official express fear from the National Fire Festival

Iran, March 12, 2018 – The occasion of National Fire Festival which nowadays is marked by protests and strikes against corruption and government’s mismanagement has caused more panic for the deputy police commander of Zanjan province, Jafar Kordloo. Kordloo who is also serving as an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) officer expressed that “police will use its full capacity to maintain security during the Fire Festival.”
“We will exert our utmost power to secure the province during the Fire Festival, as we will apply heavy-handed measures against law breakers’, and will detain them for the rest of new year’s holiday”, he said.
He also added: “we will use the ‘Provisional Police’ [read plain clothes] agents and deploy them in crowded areas, being unrecognizable for the public.  The Provisional Police Force was officially stablished in 2015, but has been around since the beginning of the Islamic Republic. The duty of this force is to identify and apprehend opposition and those who defy the strict and harsh laws of this regime.
