The Iran deal has emboldened the regime in Tehran to continue sponsoring terrorism and firing ballistic missiles with the words “death to Israel,” while abusing basic human rights, House Speaker Paul Ryan wrote in an op-ed in the Independent Journal on Monday.
Ryan wrote that the Iran deal was a “bad” deal, no matter how the Obama administration has spun it, and criticized the deal’s inability to stop nuclear warfare production.
“Time alone will tell whether the nuclear agreement stops Iran from getting the bomb, but here’s what we do know. We know that in five to eight years, respectively, the international ban on conventional weapons and ballistic missiles will be lifted. We know that in 10 to 15 years, most limits on Iran’s ability to enrich uranium and reprocess plutonium – two key steps in building a nuclear weapon – will expire. And we know that, once most of these constraints are gone, we’ll have nothing more than a promise from the mullahs that they won’t build a bomb,” Ryan wrote. “Meanwhile, an Iranian regime buoyed by a $100 billion windfall will be free to revamp its nuclear weapons program under the guise of international legitimacy.”
Ryan also mentioned that there is not going to be an opening for the U.S. government to re-impose sanctions if Iran cheated, saying that domestic and foreign companies are racing to the Iranian marketplace.
President Barack Obama called the deal “a success of diplomacy” in April. Obama told reporters that it was the “most comprehensive nuclear inspections ever negotiated.”
Many of the Republican presidential candidates have spoken out against the deal. Donald Trump remains silent at this point but has been on the record from the beginning, calling it “embarrassing.”
Ryan has been critical of Trump, indicating last week that he wouldn’t be able to support Trump as the presumptive Republican nominee. Yet, as calls for third party candidates to rise, the Republican speaker is trying to unify the party in Congress to work toward a cohesive foreign policy.
“In the coming weeks, House Republicans will present the country with an overarching vision for our national security,” Ryan wrote. “Our goal is to restore a more confident America that keeps its word and upholds its commitments. This is what we need to keep the peace, protect our homeland, and make the world a safer place for this generation and the next.”
