GCC condemns the attack on the Saudi embassy in Tehran as ’unacceptable’

Analysts say Iran has no moral right to criticize the internal affairs of other countries

Dubai: Iran has no moral right to criticize Saudi Arabia, political analysts in the region have said,Gulf News reported January 3, 2016.
GCC secretary-general Abdul Latif Al Zayani condemned the attack on the embassy as well as the Iranian statements.
In a statement issued on Sunday, a copy of which was received by Gulf News, Al Zayani said he considered the statements as an “interference in Saudi internal affairs” and said it encouraged the attacks on the diplomatic mission.
Arab Gulf states have repeatedly accused Iran of interfering in their domestic affairs through supporting anti-government groups.
Saudi Arabia along with other Gulf and regional states have long complained of Iranian interference in their domestic affairs and now Riyadh and Tehran are currently facing off in Yemen supporting opposing sides of an almost one year long civil war.
Eman Ragab from Cairo-based Al Ahram Strategic Studies Center said Iran had tried in 1979 to export its ‘Islamic’ revolution to its neighbours. When that failed, it changed its policy to supporting opponents to the ruling regimes in the Gulf.
Iranian protestors attacked the Saudi embassies in Tehran and Meshaad. No staff members were inside when the attacks took place but rioters removed the national flag and damaged embassy property.
Speaking to Gulf News, Mahjoub Al Zweiri, a political scientist and author of several books on Iran said “The issue is not sectarian… It is related to (Iran’s) anger at Saudi Arabia over regional issues.”
“The reaction was not suprising, but it should not be accepted,” Riyad Qahwaji, founder and head of the Dubai-based Institute for Near East and Gulf Military Analysis said.
Saudi Arabia condemned Iran’s “hostile” statements.
The official Saudi Press Agency, SPA, quoted a source as saying that the Iranian regime has “unveiled its real face in support of terrorism which is considered a continuation of its policy aiming to destabilize the security of the region’s countries,” said the statement.
It noted that “by defending and justifying the acts of terrorists, the Iranian regime is considered a partner of their crimes and completely accountable for its provocative and escalatory policy.”
