EU concerned over human rights situation in Iran

BRUSSELS, Sept 30 (KUNA) — The EU said Friday that the recent Court verdict confirming the prison sentence of Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi “sends a worrying signal about the human rights situation in the country.” “Freedom of expression and peaceful advocacy of human rights should be protected and not penalised. The EU reiterates its call on the Iranian authorities to respect its international human rights obligations,” said a statement by a spokesperson for EU High Representative Federica Mogherini.
A court in Tehran on Wednesday upheld a 16-years jail sentence on Narges. She had been sentenced in May on charges of violating national security and acting against the regime through her human rights campaign.
