Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi faced fierce criticism from the Al Azhar sheikh regarding the mullahs’ pressures on Sunni Iranians and the regime’s interventions in other countries’ affairs, the Bahrain-based Gulf Daily News paper reported on Friday.
“As the Al Azhar Sheikh I am responsible before God and the people. I want to speak to you frankly and express my concerns regarding Muslims that are more vulnerable than others. I am constantly receiving reports and even requests for help from a large portion of our Sunni brothers in the Islamic republic that say they are deprived of their most fundamental rights as Iranian citizens,” said Sheikh Ahmad Al Tayeb, the religious official of Cairo’s Al Azhar Mosque in his meeting with Salehi said.
Sheikh Al Azhar also called on the mullahs’ regime to refrain from interfering in regional countries’ affairs, stressing good solidarity principles and refraining from intervening in the internal affairs of other countries must be the basis of relations with others. This is especially true regarding a sensitive region such as the Persian Gulf, which various parties use as a pretext to intervene in the affairs of other Islamic countries, he added.
