Director of Lagoon Protection Plan in Iran said 75% of all lagoons in this country are in critical danger.
“Statistics show that amongst the 1,000 lagoons existing in the country and classified under the Ramsar International Convention, 70 to 75% of all lagoons are in critical conditions and/or facing serious danger. This means that some of these lagoons have lost their functions,” said Mohsen Suleimani Ruzbahani, director of Iran’s Lagoon Protection Plan.
Some time ago a bureau inside Iran’s Environment Protection Organization said 67% of the country’s lagoon areas have dried up, meaning in total over two million hectares of Iran’s three million hectare lagoon area have dried up.
