
On March 24, 1976, Argentinean military officersstaged a coup against the government of Mrs. Isabel Peron and she was ousted. Thereafter, Argentina was entangled in military rule for many years. Elected vice president of Argentina in 1973, she succeeded her late husband as president in 1974. The first woman to head the government of a Latin American nation, she served during difficult, frequently bloody, political turmoil. Following the coup political parties were outlawed and suppression and repression engulfed the country.
