On April 1, 1966, China Premier Chou En-lai in a speech announced the beginning of Cultural Revolution. It started with reforms in administrative affairs during which many members of communist party were purged. In 1976, after Mao’s death, Hua Guofeng was appointed as his substitute. After a while the surge against Cultural Revolution escalated and thousands of communist party members who were purged during Cultural Revolution reinstated. Mao’s widow Jiang Qingand a number of other sponsors of Cultural Revolution were prosecuted.
