Anti-government uprising of students and People of Tehran on July 8, 1999

At the first hours after midnight of July 8, 1999, a great number of students staged an anti-government demonstration at Amirabad student dormitory and chanted anti-repression slogans. A bit later, special anti-riot forces surrounded the region and attacked the dormitories with tear gas, bourdon and arms and brutally beat the student; three of the students were killed during this attack, more than 1000 were injured and about 1000 others were arrested by the IRGC.

Subsequently, on July 9, the students asked for resignation of Khatami’s Interior Minister; at the same day thousands of students, while chanting the famous anti-Shah slogans of the people’s demonstration against that regime “I shall kill the one who killed my brother” and ” cannon, Tank, machine gun has no effect anymore” staged demonstration against the clerical regime in Tehran. 7 other students were killed in that day; the amplitude of this demonstration reached to 17 other Iranian cities. In Tabriz, northwestern Iran, a student was killed, tens were injured and hundreds arrested; during next several days, along with participation of hundreds of thousands of the youth and people of Tehran, the demonstration reached to its climax; the people set fire on the Friday prayer place at Tehran University; the people and students shouted ” Clerical regime, dismiss, dismiss” and ” guys, uprising started, 20 yrs of silence is over”. The state-run daily Kayhan expressed fear of the organized PMOI’s entrance into the events.

The regime’s supreme Security Council headed by Khatami called the demonstration illegal and ordered the brutal suppression of the demonstration.

The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), releasing 10 statements, informed the world of the detailed events of this uprising. The Iranians supporting the PMOI staged demonstration in support of students’ uprisings; the President-elect of the Iranian Resistance, Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, in a message to the Iranian people, said: The Iranian people will never forget the bloody Friday of students’ dormitory.
