Algeria’s Independence

On June 3, 1962, Algeria officially declared its independence from French colonialism. Following 8 years of struggle between Algerian Liberation Front (FLN) and the French colonial forces, according to the Evian Agreement (a city in France), the government of France acknowledged that the fate of Algeria to be determined at a referendum. On June 1, 1962, this referendum was carried out and the absolute majority of the Algerian people voted on independence from France.

During 8 years of struggle, over half a million of the Algerian people were killed. After independence, the Democratic Republic of Algeria was founded. Algeria was under French colonialism for 132 years.
