NCRI representative: Sanctions are necessary but not sufficient

(Excerpts of interview with Mr. Hossein Abedini, representative of the National Council of Resistance of Iran in Britain):

Host: Regarding these sanctions and prohibitions, how effective these sanctions would be, particularly on the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corp (IRGC?)

Abedini: We believe that embargo on Qods Force which is the extra-territorial force of IRGC for terrorist activities is a necessary measure but not sufficient. We as the National Council of Resistance of Iran( NCRI), i.e. the main Iranian regime’s opposition, believe that besides the Qods Force, the totality of the IRGC and terrorist dictatorship ruling Iran must be announced forbidden and put in the terrorist list. This is an essential measure to prevent expansion and export of fundamentalism and terrorism to the whole region and particularly this regime’s rising meddling in Iraq and Afghanistan and also preventing that regime of acquiring nuclear weapon.

The NCRI was the first that asked for imposing full-scale sanctions on this regime and as your reporter pointed out, it includes diplomatic, oil, technologic and trade embargos as well as putting the IRGC in terrorist list. We believe that harsh sanctions should be imposed on this regime, but only sanctions are not enough, rather it should be along with support of democratic demands of millions of Iranians.

Host: In your view how effective the sanctions would be and to where does it lead?

Abedini: In fact the sanctions are very effective and so far there have been three UN resolutions on this regard. Although the imposed embargos have been very weak, yet, contrary to what the regime claims to be ineffective, they have been quite effective and the regime is under severe pressure, but these new sanctions and terrorist designation of Qods force will be very effective but not sufficient.

We believe that the solution is neither a military solution nor the continuation of the appeasement policy, because the appeasement policy’s continuance would encourage mullahs in following their deadly policies in Iran in order to acquire nuclear weapon and to dominate the Middle East.

We believe the only alternative would be the democratic solution presented by Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, Iranian Resistance President-elect, and the first step on this path is to respect the just demands of millions of Iranians. They ask for real democratic change in Iran, and this problem is possible by supporting the Iranian people’s democratic movement besides comprehensive sanctions and to lift the bans from the Iranian main opposition movement, the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI), for ever; because the bans on the PMOI would be a green light to the mullahs’ regime to follow its unbridled policy that is Killing the Iranian people and warmongering policy outside Iran.
