Iran: report – prisoners in Tehran held in inhumane conditions

Reports from inside Iran indicate the use of the Greater Tehran Central Prison has begun when construction in this facility was yet to be finished and even the drinking water system was not completed.
In this prison, known as Fashafaviye, running water was available for just 2 of the past 48 hours.
Over 500 prisoners have recently been transferred to Greater Tehran Central Prison on Thursday, July 30, and they began protesting inadequate conditions and lack of services.
“Mandatory open-air time in the prison courtyard from 9 am to 1 pm, atrocious hygiene conditions in the restrooms that don’t have any hoses, water and gas services being cut off constantly, and the lack of any cooling devices despite the summer heat are amongst the numerous difficulties the prisoners are facing. Furthermore there are only 240 beds for the 542 prisoners in this facility, and the remaining people are sleeping in the restrooms and hallways,” an informed source said.
This source also referred to the inhumane pressures imposed on prisoners regarding the lack of any medical care, and especially visits by medical specialists.
Any protest by the prisoners is suppressed by the prison’s special guards resorting to force, the source added.
In one incident the prison guards reacted by beating a prisoner, Abbas Ahunbar, after he protested. The guards then completely shaved his hair since he was one of the prisoners that sparked protests amongst others.
