Recent reports indicate that the illness of political prisoner Atena Damei, currently held in the women’s ward of the notorious Evin Prison, has advanced, after nearly a month as Tehran judiciary officials continue to refrain from sending her to an equipped medical center. Daemi was arrested by the Revolutionary Guards intelligence in September 2014 and transferred to Evin’s ward 2A. In March she was sentenced to 14 years behind bars.
During the ten months she has been in jail physicians have seen signs of numerous illnesses, including MS and cancer. Her family has been following up on this matter seeking to have this prisoner sent to a hospital. However, their efforts to this day have been futile.
The physician of Evin Prison, aka Taghi-pour, has reportedly placed immoral conditions before Atena to be able to be visited by a medical specialist at a hospital. This despicable conduct has raised much protests by the imprisoned activist.
Ever since, Khodabakhshi, the representative of the public prosecutor’s office, has neglected immediate orders by physicians. He has referred to footages of Atena Daemi being posted on social media showing her going to a hospital, and under this pretext is preventing her transfer to a hospital.
This is truly placing the life of this prisoner in serious danger.
