Call on UN Secretary General and US to press Iraq to respect Ashraf, Liberty residents’ rights

Parliamentarians from the Tajdid slate – a party from the Iraqiya coalition in the Iraqi Parliament- including Ahmed al-Alwani, Chairman of Iraqi Parliament Economy and Investment Committee, wrote in a statement addressing UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon:
“The provision of minimum humanitarian necessities and logistics at Camp Liberty, especially for the transfer of the remaining residents from Ashraf to Liberty, is essential and must not be met with the Iraqi Government’s obstructions.
“We have time and again reiterated that they are no threat to Iraq and its sovereignty and are protected persons under international treaties, whom must not be subjected to mistreatment.
By transferring two thirds of their people to Liberty, Ashraf residents have shown their good-will and have proven that they seek a peaceful solution.
“To this end, while supporting their legitimate demands, we call on the UN and US to press the Iraqi Government to cooperate in the realization of a peaceful and fair solution over this humanitarian issue without setting any obstacles.”
