AP, Baghdad, 2 Jan 2012 – Iraq’s parliament speaker has warned against using security forces for political purposes as tensions increase among the country’s rival politicians. Monday’s televised comments by Osama al-Nujaifi’ a Sunni’ come after Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s Shiite-backed government issued an arrest warrant for the country’s top Sunni politician. Al-Maliki’ a Shiite’ controls the ministries that oversee Iraq’s police and military. Some Sunnis accuse the prime minister of using the security forces to try to consolidate power. Al-Nujafi says the Iraqi security forces should not be used to repress people and they ‘should not interfere in political matters.’
