Iraqi Parliament won’t keep silence against egregious breaches of human rights in Iraqi prisons

In an interview with Asharqiya TV, Osama al-Nujaifi, the speaker of Iraqi parliament said: through concerned commissions, since long time ago, the parliament has been informed of cases of torture, death of detainees under torture, illegal arrests and the recent case of detaining women and aggression against them in jails. We have formed an investigating committee which will present its preliminary report on Wednesday.
Hamid al-Mutlak, al-Iraqiya slate MP, considered insidious tortures against women inmates as Maliki and high judicial council’s responsibility and called for their release and halt of these measure that are in violation of Islamic decrees.
Khalid al-Alvani from al-Iraqiya also condemned Maliki’s government’s silence against torture of women in prisons and underlined the fact that government’s silence indicates the reality of this issue. He stressed on the imperative of disclosing the identities of those who carry out torture and aggression against women in prisons.
