Middle East Times, November 10, 200 (excerpts) — Backers of the dissident People’s Mujahedin Organization of Iran held a ceremony in Tehran in observation of the death of one of its members in an Iranian jail.
PMOI member Abdolreza Rajabi died Oct. 30 while in detention at the Gohardasht prison from alleged torture at the hands of Iranian authorities. Human Rights Watch in a 2007 report called on Tehran to investigate the deaths of prisoners “under suspicious circumstances” at Gohardasht.
The PMOI said in a statement Monday that supporters of the group also gathered at Rajabi’s grave in the city of Mahidasht in northeastern Iran. The backers were under the observation of Iranian authorities, the statement said.
Lawmakers with the British Parliamentary Committee for Iran Freedom last week issued a statement condemning the news, saying it was a sign that Iran was continuing with its abuse of political prisoners.
