Jordan’s king warns Mideast peace failure will increase Iran’s ambitions

Jordan’s King Abdullah II has warned that the failure of the peace process between Palestinian and Israel will increase Iran’s ambitions in the region, Associated Press reported on March 7, 2008.

The Jordanian monarch who is on an official visit to the United States, in an interview with Washington-based National Public Radio, warned of Iran’s growing influence, directly as well as through Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza.
“Those in the Iranian government that are pursuing this policy have hijacked the Palestinian corps,” he said. “The failure of the peace process will get them to increase their ambitions in the region.”
He also warned that “There are new state actors (such as Iran) in the region and my fear is that the failure of the peace process will increase the aggression of the extremists in our region.”

He added “It will bring us into a very dark future; all of us…”
He said. “And if it doesn’t play out between the Israelis and Palestinians, there’s Lebanon and there’s also Iraq.”
