The Iraqi Northern Jurists Association issued a statement condemning the atrocious conditions at Camp Liberty, holding the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative to Iraq Martin Kobler responsible for this situation.
Excerpts of this statement are as follows:
“The UN must continuously protect Ashraf residents and guarantee these individuals enjoy their rights. One of the most important demands of the Iraqi people, who have lived alongside Ashraf residents for more than a quarter of a century, is for the siege enforced on these residents to be lifted. This [siege] is against all Islamic and Arabic values and it must be brought to an end. Therefore, we hold the UN, its Secretary-General and his Special Representative in Iraq responsible for this situation, and they are also responsible for the future of Ashraf residents and their rights to be respected in Iraq.”
