The Arab Counsel in Defense of Ashraf issued a statement on the Iraqi government’s lies aimed at justifying an attack on Camp Ashraf to steal the residents’ property.
Following two attacks against Camp Ashraf, the Iraqi government claimed Ashraf’s lands will be returned to farmers. Two years later, despite all their lies it has become clear for everyone that not even a centimeter of that land has been given to any farmers. In fact, we have learned that the government’s real estate office in the Khalis preliminary court in a letter #5513 dated 12 December 2012 with specific citations has placed these lands under the name of the Ministry of Defense.
This letter shows that despite the Iraqi government’s ridiculous scenario of agricultural lands, only mentioned to carry out the attacks against the residents, Ashraf’s lands have been placed at the disposal of the Ministry of Defense. Any other claims on these lands are void, showing the Iraqi government’s evil and illegal intentions.
Since Ashraf residents were forced to evacuate Ashraf, the residents’ legal sovereignty rights over Ashraf’s properties and buildings must be paid.
Articles 1120 and 1121 of the Iraqi Civil Law recognizes Ashraf’s sovereignty rights on the buildings and infrastructure, all built by the residents.
As the Arab Counsel in Defense of Ashraf once again we emphasize the residents’ rights over their moveable and immovable properties in Ashraf, and remind UNAMI and the US government of their responsibility to provide for the residents’ legal rights over their property.
