Syrian opposition forces close to breaking Aleppo siege
Anadolu Agency- Syrian opposition forces are very close to lifting the siege imposed on them by Bashar al-Assad’s forces in parts of southwestern Aleppo city, according to official social media accounts of an opposition group.
According to social media accounts of Jaish al-Fatah (Army of Conquest), the opposition group said it was close to breaking the siege after it reached an Assad-controlled artillery school in the city. The operation to capture the school, regarded as one of the most significant strongholds of the Assad’s regime in Aleppo, had been launched along with the Free Syrian Army.
Jaish al-Fatah claims it has taken over an officers’ building and advanced further inside the school; it said it was now only a matter of time before the opposition forces would reach the Ramouseh Roundabout and free the blockaded areas in Aleppo.
The artillery school is said to be a powerful support point in the regime’s supply lines coming from the city of Hama in central Syria, passing through the town of Khanasser in south of Aleppo.
Opposition forces had attempted to control the school several times in the past, but each time they retreated.
Ruters, AP-Syrian rebels and insurgents said on Friday they are edging closer to breaking the government force’s siege of the opposition-held part of Aleppo, taking parts of the city’s military college close to a strategic siege area.
The announcement came on social media, saying they had pushed into the college, where artillery men trained in peace-time. The facility is located about 1.6 kilometers (1 mile) from the besieged opposition areas.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group confirmed that a part of the facility was captured. The activist group said fierce clashes had erupted around the college, with casualties on both sides.
The rebels on Friday also shelled a nearby, government-controlled neighborhood of Aleppo.
The UN estimates that between 250,000 and 300,000 residents have been trapped in the besieged, eastern part of Aleppo since pro-government forces cut the last supply route in July. The world body and numerous relief organizations have warned of a looming humanitarian catastrophe as conditions deteriorate.
According to Syrian rebel forces, the Jaish al-Fatah operation room has sezied the Aleppo Artillery Base in southern Aleppo almost breaking the siege laid by the Syrian army on the rebel-controlled parts of the city.
Other sources say that clashes are still ongoing in the northern part of the base.
Meanwhile, rebels have broken the siege in the Ramousah neighborhood of Aleppo and Syrian army has been defeated in this area.
Rebel leaders are commending victories against Aleppo siege.
