Iraqi political parties and sheikhs expressed their support for Ashraf residents’ humanitarian request for Camp Liberty. These statements condemn any kind of involuntary relocation and protest Martin Kobler’s violation of impartiality and cooperation in the Iraqi government’s breaches of its obligations.
Iraq Christian Democratic Party
“This is the responsibility of the UN and US to carry out their obligations to end the Iraqi government’s inhumane measures against Ashraf and Liberty residents, and impel the Iraqi government to provide the residents’ humanitarian requests.
Martin Kobler’s insistence on relocating Ashraf residents while their legitimate minimum demands are not provided for only encourages the Iraqi government to impose even more pressure on the residents.”
Tribal sheikhs and dignitaries of Iraq’s Salahuddin Province
“In contrast to the continuous commitments made by Iraq, the UN and US on connecting Liberty’s water network to that of Baghdad’s, to this day no step has been taken in this regard.
We demand urgent action taken by the UN and US government to resolve the water problem and connecting Liberty to Baghdad’s water grid. The transfer of the remaining groups is not practical before these problems are resolved.”
Sheikh Ali al-Hamdani, Grand Sheikh of Al Hamdan Tribe:
“We, the sheikhs and tribal leaders of the Hamdan Tribe, condemn the vicious detestable crime of limiting water supplies to Camp Liberty residents. We consider them as our own brothers and sisters and for over the past 25 years we have seen from them nothing but kindness, humane values and perseverance alongside the Iraqi people against our common enemy the Iranian regime.”
