In a letter to President Obama, Italian Committee of Parliamentarians and Citizens for Free Iran, referring the limitations imposed on Camp Ashraf and the increasing pressures by the Iraqi forces, asked him to hand over the security of the Ashraf camp to American troops to prevent a human catastrophe.
The text of the letter is as follows:
President of the United States
Mr. Barak Obama
The White House
Roma, 30/06/2009
Dear Mr. President,
We, at the Italian Committee of Parliamentarians and Citizens for Free Iran, would like to bring to your kind attention an urgent matter regarding Ashraf city, where members of Iranian opposition, the Peoples Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI) are residing.
In the past few days we have been receiving some disturbing news about the situation concerning the ever increasing pressure by Iraqi forces on this camp. The latest news are as follow:
•On June 25th, 27th and 28th, 6 trucks carrying foodstuff including fruits, milk powder and dried food as the very basic needs of the Camp’s residents have been denied entrance into the Camp.
• Since June 5th the Iraqi labors working for many years in the Camp have been stopped at the entrance and have not been allowed to enter.
•Iraqi government, against its international commitments and laws, has claimed that Ashraf residents have no legal status. This is despite the fact that they have been living in Ashraf for 23 years and were recognized by the US forces as “Protected Persons” under the 4th Geneva Convention since 2004.
As you very well know, since transferring of the camp’s security from American troop to Iraqis, under severe pressure from the Iranian regime the residents of Ashraf have been subjected to inhuman and illegal measures.
Soon after the security transfer, Iraqi troops surrounded the Camp and waged an unprecedented psychological campaign, practically on behalf of Iranian regime, against them. This siege soon will enter its fifth month.
Iraqi government, unable to stand the Iranian regime, sent the police to tighten its siege of Ashraf and wants to settle in the Camp and set up a police station there.
All these can lead to a human tragedy, which must be avoided. The Iraqi government has shown time after time that cannot stand Iranian pressure, especially as things are getting tense in Iran. There is no way to avoid a human catastrophe unless your urgent intervention would stop all these repressive, unjust and illegal measures, otherwise we are heading for the worst.
We are asking you to hand over the security of the Ashraf camp to American troops to prevent this.
We strongly belief in your firm action as the world is watching the situation in Iran.
Best regards,
Italian Committee of Parliamentarians and Citizens for Free Iran
