Iran: A backer’s self-immolation in protest

According to reports from the city of Golpayegan, West-Central Iran a 38-year-old baker set himself ablaze on Friday, Dec. 23rd in protest to economic pressures and problems with insurance. He died on Saturday.
“Bakers in Iran do not enjoy sufficient economic benefits. Their income is not even sufficient for a simple living condition, due to the 4-year delay by the government in announcing the official rates which has forced in many bakers to go bankrupt.” said a member of the directing board of Bakers’ Union of Isfahan Province.
Last October, a municipality worker set himself on fire protesting his 4-month overdue salary payment. Also in a similar incident in mid-September, a fired worker of “Nik Alyaf” factory in the city of “Divan Dareh”, western Iran, committed suicide.
Last year a worker of Agh Dareh goldmine, also western Iran in the city of “Mian Do Ab” and an employee of Taleghani hospital in “Kermanshah”, Central Iran, set themselves ablaze.
According to official statistics, 93% of the workers are on temporary contracts of their employments, and their living conditions are deteriorating constantly.
