Taleqani Leaves Tehran to Object Khomeini

On April 13, 1979, in the first days after victory of anti-Monarchial Revolution, in protest to the reactionary and suppressive measures of new regime of the mullahs under the name of Islam, Ayatollah Taleqani, a prominent clergy who rejected the rule of mullahs, left Tehran to protest against the violation of rights and freedom of the PMOI in Iran.
The People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI) released a statement in this regard on April 15 which was followed by a great demonstration outside the PMOI headquarters in Tehran by the youths and students. This move forced Khomeini to back off and yield to Father Taleqani’s demand for formation of popular councils. Father Taleqani had said that closing of his offices and leaving Tehran was a protesting measure against blatant violation of human rights and basic freedoms of all Iranians.
