Condemning the suppressive crimes of the Iranian regime, a number of members of the European Parliament (EP) endorsed a resolution to condemn of the women’s right in Iran by the Iranian regime in the EP session in Strasburg. The EP members also expressed their support for the Iranian resistance and its President- elect as the hope for democratic changes in Iran.
Part of the reslution by EP members reads:
– Iran ranks the highest number of execution of the youth in the world
– The women’s rights activists are faced with increasing suppression; more than 100 of them have been arrested, interrogated and sentenced in the past two years.
– The situation of human rights has worsened in general since 2005 and the number of executions has almost doubled in 2007.
– Execution has been implemented on those who have committed crime when they were under 18.
In its resolution, European Parliament has condemned the suppression of social movements especially that of women’s rights activists.
Before voting for the resolution, EP members had speeches regarding severe violation of women’s rights in Iran.
Yanoush Evenscovich, member of EP from Poland and deputy of EP Foreign Commission: ”Today there was a meeting between Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the president-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, and the members of EP in Strasbourg. Mrs. Rajavi clearly expressed the importance of administration of women’s rights in the activities of the Iranian opposition and once again pointed out the fact that the Iranian resistance and its activities promise the prospect of democratic changes in Iran. The Deputy of EP Foreign Committee added: Steps should be taken to make this change happen, before anything else we should make certain that everybody follows the rule of the courts. The court has ordered the elimination of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran from the list of terrorist organizations. Therefore, the EU should follow this decision. Finally we should recognize the National Council of Resistance of Iran as the representative of the Iranian opposition forces.”
Carlo Fatuzzo , member of EP from Italy: “I have been recognized by Iranian officials as the supporter of anti-Iranian terrorists, a label that is an honor for me, this was mentioned in an official meeting between the Iranian Foreign Minister and a delegation from the Commission of EU delegation. Mr. President and the present members in this meeting, judge for yourself how dangerous I am for the Iranian officials?! This shows the credibility of the ministers and the Iranian officials.”
Armando Veneto, member of EP from Italy: “We have grave duty regarding Human Rights both in EU and EP but because of economic issues such as oil or opportunism of the governments; these issues have been overshadowed therefore, it is necessary to confront this policy.”
Tunne Kelam, member of EP from Estonia: “Since 30 years ago the Islamic Republic of Iran has become one of the main threats against Human Rights and democracy. The women are prime victims of this extremist Islamism and they have been deprived from their rights by this regime.
Fortunately many women have stood up against this regime. We are honored to see that the main resistance movement, the National Council of Resistance of Iran, is lead by a woman, Mrs. Maryam Rajavi. The issuance of resolution is good but not enough. We should practically support these women.”
