77 Iraqi MPs call on Catherine Ashton to visit Camp Liberty

Through a letter to Catherine Ashton, the EU High Representative in foreign relations, seventy seven Iraqi parliament members wrote: Ashraf continues to be a sensitive and critical issue for all involved parties. With immediate and direct attention to this issue during your visit from Iraq, we ask you to visit Camp Liberty that is the subject of the reports of inhumane treatment of the residents.
The letter reads:” After granting human treatment assurances and safeguarding basic protections by you, Secretary Clinton and Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, 2000 Ashraf residents were transferred to Camp Liberty. But unfortunately, the doubts for converting “Liberty” to a “concentration camp” were turned to certainty and reports indicate that the residents are in collective custody and are faced with obstruction in providing their basic human necessities. Serious shortages such as water, necessary infrastructures deficiencies, inhumane conditions for the patients and injured residents by Iraqi forces attacks in Ashraf, presence of armed forces and armored vehicles in residential area and lack of respect for the agreements signed by the UN, have created despicable situation.”
Addressing Catherine Ashton, the Iraqi representatives reiterated: “your presence in Baghdad is the best opportunity to visit Camp Liberty and prove that the EU undertakes a tangible measure to save the peaceful solution which we believe is on the verge of failure.
We had already warned the UN that silence against this sensitive issue bears dire human rights consequences and we believe that EU, US and UN have legal and moral responsibilities to stop the process of transfer of the residents from Ashraf to Camp Liberty so long as this situation in Camp Liberty has not emended.
