Ms. Maryam Akbari Monfared, a political prisoner held in Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison, has finally given permission to receive treatment at a clinic outside the prison complex for her illnesses.
Akbari Monfared was arrested in January 2010 following the major uprisings of that year. On June 1, 2010 she was sentenced to 15 years behind bars.
The charges raised against this political prisoner was “moharebe” (enmity against God) through her support for the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK). Two of her brothers were executed in 1981 and 1984 on charges of having relations with the PMOI/MEK. Her other younger brother was executed in the summer of 1988 along with thousands of other political prisoners.
