Mayors of Gemert-Bakel and Son en Breugel, two Cities in Netherlands, in separate letters to Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations, condemned the suppressive measures of the Iranian regime against the Iranian people and violation of Ashraf residents’ rights by the Iraqi government at the behest of the clerical regime of Iran and asked for assumption of Ashraf protection by the United Nations.
Mr. Jan Van Maasakkers, mayor of Gemert-Bakel, in his letter to UN Secretary General wrote:
“I am deeply concerned about the oppression of the Iranian people by their government and I am equally distressed by the perilous situation of 3400Iranian dissidents in Camp Ashraf-Iraq whose lives are threatened by conspiracies of the Iranian regime attempting to annihilate the residents through the Iraqi government.
Regrettably, the Iraqi government caries out these unlawful and brutal measures against Ashraf residents at the behest of the Iranian regime, while paying no attention to repeated objections by thousands of parliamentarians in Europe and U.S. as well as international human rights organizations. The Iraqi government has shown that it has no intention to protect Camp Ashraf residents.
In the view of the above account, I urge you to use your authority to have UN peacekeeping forces undertake responsibility for protection of Ashraf residents”
Drs. J.F.M. Gaillard, Mayor of Son en Breugel, in the letter to the UN Secretary General, emphasized the following demands:
– The oppressive measures of the Iranian regime against the Iranian people should be condemned.
– The Iraqi government should officially recognize the rights of Ashraf residents, especially recognition
of the European Parliament’s resolution of April 24, 2009 on Ashraf.
– The Iraqi government must end the inhumane siege against Ashraf since January 2009.
– The UN peacekeeping forces should undertake responsibility for protection of Ashraf residents because the government of Iraq, being under the influence of the Iranian regime, has shown that it has neither the intention, nor the power or the competence to protect the residence of Camp Ashraf.
– The US Forces in Iraq should guarantee protection of Ashraf residents from further attack, violence or forcible displacement.
