Al-Seyassah daily (Kuwait), 5 Oct 2012 – A group of Alawite activists call on members of their cult – of which Bashar Assad is from – to join the revolution.
“To all Alawites throughout Syria, the situation has become unacceptable. Rise against the corrupt family that has no roots other than treason and mercenary measures, and no objective other than plundering our wealth and ruling over us,” a statement issued by a group going by the name of ‘Free Alawites’ announced.
“The Syrian regime uses the sectarian element as tools to annihilate the revolution,” said Alawite activist Abu-Jil in the Free Alawites Group. “Sectarianism is most definitely an offspring of the security apparatus” and “the regime has worked for this for 18 months,” he added.
“Of course the people are very angry, and we see this as natural. But all of this sectarianism will end with the downfall of this regime,” he added referring to concerns expressed about regime victims resorting to getting revenge from Alawites.
This group consists of around 20 Alawite activists who have taken part in various phases of the protests.
