The top US Senator says President Barack Obama believes the chances of getting a nuclear deal with Iran are now below 50/50. This comes as the world powers face what may be a last stretch of negotiations towards a deal.
But several key sticking points are delaying the process, including Iranian regime’s request that the UN lift its arms embargo and missile sanctions. But world powers are reluctant to do that.
CNN in Vienna said… after the intensity of talks from Monday in to Tuesday, yesterday, Wednesday, seemed like a very, very slow day. That tells a lot about the nature of the talks hearing from such senior position, setting the expectations low. CNN added that it could also be taking hard and firm position for their own domestic consumption, but also perhaps is a very strong signal to the Iranian delegation. When President Obama lowers his expectations, as he has done, it has to send a clear signal to the Iranians that the Obama’s team, Secretary of State, John Kerry and others, are not really going to be budged and shifted in his position.
According to the CNN it is not so much lowering the expectations, but showing the strength and unity around that position. Foreign ministers of France, Germany and Britain arrived in Vienna last night and had a talk with Secretary Kerry. But with deadline keep on blowing through and playing down expectations means it still could go either way.
