By passing a statement, the Governorate Council of Torino- Italy expressed its concern over the Iranian regime’s threats against Ashraf residents and asked the Iraqi government to officially acknowledge Ashraf residents’ rights in the framework of the international law and the Third Common Article of the Geneva Conventions. It also asked the US government to guarantee protection of Ashraf residents in the context of its international obligations.
Part of this statement signed by Sergio Valero, chairman of the Torino Governorate Council, and 31 members of the Governorate Council reads: “The threats of the Iranian government against Ashraf residents, members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran in Iraq, and the remarks by some Iraqi officials against them has raised concerns of international public opinion. What increases our concern is prohibition of entry of lawyers, parliament representatives, political personalities from foreign countries and even the families of Ashraf residents who are being stopped at Ashraf entrance in a very unsuitable weather condition. Such behavior has turned Ashraf into a prison in practice.
Iraq’s National Security Advisor’s measures and his remarks cited violate the international covenants including the Geneva Conventions, International Humanitarian Law, non-refoulement principle, Convention Against Torture, Refugee Convention and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
