Numerous Iraqi associations and organizations issued different statements expressing their support for the call on the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to replace Martin Kobler as his envoy in Iraq.
The Association of Egyptian Jurists in Defense of Ashraf Residents, representing over 9,000 lawyers and jurists from 13 Arab countries, in contact with the International Committee of Jurists in Defense of Ashraf and international and Arabic organizations, issued a statement saying Martin Kobler’s recent remarks are nothing but lies. This entity also welcomed the report issued by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention describing camps Ashraf and Liberty as detention centers.
The Egyptian lawyers called on Ban Ki-moon to replace his envoy in Iraq and immediately recognize Liberty as a refugee camp under UN and UNHCR supervision.
The Association of Jordanian Lawyers in Defense of Ashraf welcomed the UN committee report, saying this leaves no doubt that Martin Kobler must be replaced since he is only facilitating crimes in Iraq.
We demand actions by the UN and international community on the following issues:
– Declaring Liberty as a refugee camp under full UNHCR supervision and the imposition of all international laws in this camp
– Allowing refugees in Camp Ashraf to sell or transfer their assets
– Lifting the illegal and cruel siege on Liberty, including freedom of movement, the right to see a doctor or medical facility of one’s choice, and allowing residents’ family members, journalists and MPs from across the world to visit Camp Liberty.
