On Tuesday, June 26, 2012, for the fourth consecutive day, in clear breach of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Iraqi government and the United Nations, the Iraqi Prime Ministerial Committee in charge of suppression of the residents prevented the entry of food – including meat, potatoes, tomatoes, onions and fruit – into Camp Liberty.
Under the terms of the MoU, the protection of Liberty must be carried out by police forces that are especially-trained by the UN. In recent weeks the Iraqi government has attempted to transfer the control of affairs, including the inspection of food items, to ‘plain-clothes’ agents. These agents have been brought to Liberty with the sole aim of irritating and suppressing the residents. They have participated in the psychological torture of the residents over the past three and a half years with 300 loudspeakers, communications-jamming devices and other suppressive measures.
In recent days, the residents’ representatives have repeatedly asked UNAMI representatives to compel Iraq to abide by its commitments and demanded that the police inspect the food trucks, but this has been rejected by the Suppression Committee.
The Iranian Resistance once again draws the attention of the UN Secretary General, UN High Commissioner For Refugees, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the SRSG for Iraq, the US government, and the US ambassador in Iraq to the dangerous steps that the Iraqi government is taking against the 2000 residents of Liberty and urges them to compel Iraq to abide by International Humanitarian Law and International Human Rights Law and implement the MoU and other commitments it has given to the UN.
