VRT, February 23, 2010 – The Iranian Opposition in exile, the so called People’s Mojahedin, wants that the West take strict sanctions very soon against Iran. The country must be punished for his nuclear program and also meaning a support for the ongoing popular protests that began after the presidential elections in June last year.
Maryam Rajavi, the leader of the Opposition in exile was today afternoon in Brussels. Jan Balliauw (VRT journalist) was able to talk with her.
12 days ago was the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, a deadlock between the regime of the ayatollahs and the Opposition. Thousands of agents and militia members could prevent that the Opposition to come massively to the streets.
But for the leader of the Iranian Opposition in exile, Maryam Rajavi, who was this afternoon in the European Parliament, the end of the regime is only a matter of time.
Maryam Rajavi: ’The past nine months have shown that the protest is a real threat to the regime. Even though they tried, they are still not able to suppress the protests. This regime is now much weaker than before, and a return to before is impossible.’
Yet there is no real ’Opposition front’. This gives former presidential candidate and Opposition leader Moussavi the support of Rajavi and her People’s Mojahedin, but Rajavi doesn’t hide that for her Mousavi is too close to the ayatollahs.
Maryam Rajavi: ’We have disagreements about the respect for the freedom of the people, and the need for a regime that corresponds to the will of the people and not to the will of the religious rulers.’
Meanwhile has Iran turn his nuclear program in a higher gear. Thus Natanz enrich uranium now to 20%. The International Atomic Agency said last week that they cannot exclude that Iran is working on a nuclear weapon.
According to Rajavi the West must urgently adopt tough sanctions.
Maryam Rajavi: ’The West should adopt a tougher stance against the Mullahs and no longer make concessions. A boycott of the regime is urgent and important.’
