Lord Cutter, a member of the UK House of Lords wrote in a message to the Ashraf residents, marking the anniversary of the July 2009 attacks on Ashraf:” Twelve months have passed since the barbaric attack of the Iraqi security forces on Ashraf, during which 11 residents of Ashraf were killed and 500 others were injured.
During the days of July 28th and 29th, 2009, the world witnessed the resistance and willpower of the Iranian people who did not yield to the barbarism of the mullahs’ regime and its proxies in Iraq.
Despite the regime’s ruthless suppression, the resistance of Ashraf residents is a great inspiration for the millions of people of Iran.
I am proud to be defending the residents of Ashraf and the people of Iran hoping for democratic change in their country.
By committing the crimes of the July 28th and 29th attacks, the Iraqi government has left no doubt that its neither capable nor does it desire to provide protection for the residents of Ashraf and that is why I call on the US forces to assume the responsibility of the protection of Ashraf residents.
I also want UNAMI to have a perpetual presence in Ashraf and take necessary measures to lift all inhumane restrictions imposed by the Iraqi government. I call on the UN to accept the responsibility of the protection of Ashraf residents.”
