
On April 4th, 1966, Martin Luther King, leader of US Blacks was shot in Memphis, Tennessee and murdered.
He was born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1929; he gained his Ph.D. in Theology from Boston University in 1955.
Martin Luther King strongly opposed racism and racial discrimination and was turned to one of the US Blacks leaders; in one of his speeches, he said: We have no other choices but protest; we have demonstrated our endless patience during long years.
Martin was arrested in a big demonstration staged in protest against racism in spring 1963 along with many of his colleagues and was imprisoned. In a letter from prison, he wrote: we have learned through our painful experiences that freedom will never be given voluntarily; freedom must be obtained by the oppressed people.
The Noble Peace Prize was given to Martin Luther Ling in 1964.
