
11 Members of Iraqi Parliament, in a letter to Secretary General of the United Nations, expressed their concern over intensifying Ashraf siege and asked for his intervention to guarantee protections and well being of Ashraf residents.
In their letters to Ban Ki-moon, the Iraqi MPs from the Iraqi National Faction, Iraqi National Accord, Iraqi National Dialogue Front, and Independent Arab, underscored: ” Ashraf is a non-armed area and there is no reason to use force in an environment whose residents are peaceful; we call on the Iraqi government to keep away from any tensions and flaring up the crisis and to comply with the context of the European Parliament resolution regarding Ashraf residents’ situation which is considered a reasonable and humanitarian solution to this file.
The letter of Iraqi MPs to Mr. Ban Ki-moon partly reads:
“We, the Parliament representatives, would like to draw your attention to an immediate humanitarian issue in our country which is at the focus of international attentions; for months, 3,500 members of the Iranian opposition who are residents of Camp Ashraf in Diyala province of Iraq have been under severe siege and there is an extensive human rights campaign underway in various countries of the world to end this siege that you are certainly aware of.
The latest concerning event has been the sudden intrusion of the Iraqi police units into Ashraf on May 28 intending to enter the camp which faced the objection of the refugees residing in the camp, because they have cooperated with Iraqi government for implementation of in demands during recent months. Ashraf residents, among other things, agreed with the Iraqi Human Rights Ministry request for surveying privately the will of residents for staying or leaving Iraq. They arranged interviews and 99.7 percent of residents explicitly stressed on staying in Ashraf.
We also regard your personal intervention determining- who have always asked for guaranteeing protection and well being of the refugees in the framework of the RtoP principle at any condition- for international guarantees to respect these people’s rights
