Iran: intellectual women become target of gang harassment

Two chess player women were the targets of abuse and harassment after they left for a fresh air at a local park.
The state-run ISNA news agency cited a Russian website reporting: “On the sidelines of the Grand Prix chess games in Tehran the participants faced problems in this competition. Some complained about the hot conditions at the site, while others had problems with their mandatory hijabs in these games. Despite all this, a much bigger problem rose on the sidelines of these games. Two women chess players by the names of Valentine Gunina from Russia and Piya Keramling from Sweden had gone for a walk in the park. When returning to their hotel a large man attacked Gunina and fled the scene after harassing her. The two female chess players became terrified, and now they never leave their hotel without being accompanied by men.”
