ERBIL, Kurdistan Region, May 15, 2016 – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday that his country would continue to receive Syrian refugees and keep its doors open to them.
“As Turkey, since the first days of the crisis, we did not abandon our Syrian brothers. We opened our doors to them, and we will continue to open them,” Turkish state-run Anadolu Agency quoted Erdogan as telling a group of foreign students in Istanbul.
Erdogan’s comments come at a time when the EU promised to grant billions of euros to support Turkey in the face of the flow of refugees fleeing from Syria to Turkey.
A few days ago Erdogan accused the EU of not abiding by its promises to his country. According to the agency, the Turkish president made it clear that Turkey did not rely on any help from the EU to aid the Syrian refugees.
“For six years our [Syrian] brothers were being brutally murdered by an illegitimate regime,” Erdogan said. “Until today, about 600,000 innocent people have been killed with barrel bombs, ballistic missiles, torture and chemical weapons.”
Turkey is hosting nearly three million Syrian refugees.
