Let me thank the Iranian American Association of Missouri for hosting us, and the members of Unites States Senate for providing us fabulous venue.
I will make my remakes brief, because there are a lot of speakers who have a lot more interesting things to say than I. I would just make a couple points. On no issue is the role and power of Congress and influence of American public more important and more critical than Iran. We are at the point we are today in the relationship with Iran largely because of Congress, and the steadfastness that members of Congress on, both the Senate and the House, Republican and Democrat, of these many, many years since 1979 quite frankly, for the consistency they have shown. And they have not been acting on their own, I mean it is because they are reflecting the will of American people. And because of the steadfastness of sanctions, because on the willingness that Senator Peters said to confront and deter aggression from the Islamic Republic, I think we have brought Iran to the position it is today, which is an isolated country, a bankrupt country, a country whose ideology unfortunately has got in the second lease on life with the extremism we see in the region, but before the Arab Spring, I think had been recognized as bankrupt ideology. And most importantly we have been able to contain their nuclear program through tough sanctions.
If they are willing to negotiate in good faith and seriously to eliminate their nuclear energy program and their weapon program, that would be great, but that’s not the case. So, my simple point is if we are going to continue to contain Iran, if we are going to continue to protect the region, and if we are going to continue to protect the people of Unites States, it is the people of the Unites States have to make that case to the Congress, to the rest of American public, and to the US administration. And you’re being here today, and you’re having this this event, is part of that process.
So, thank you, keep it up, you make an incredible difference, as you heard the senator himself said, and really we are in it for a long haul. This is not as you all know, it’s not a problem that is going to be resolve overnight, or go away quickly. It is going to take fundamental changes within Iran along the lines, that senator Peters suggested, but your role and your contribution to that struggle is absolutely essential.
