
NHK NEWS LINE, 26 March 2018— Egypt’s police have killed 6 members of an Islamic militant group suspected of a deadly bombing that targeted a local security chief.
The bomb exploded in the northern city of Alexandria on Saturday as a car carrying the senior security official drove past. The official was unhurt but 2 people including a police officer were killed.
Egyptian authorities believe the group is an armed wing of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.
The Egyptian interior ministry said it believes the outlawed Hasm movement was involved in the attack. It said security forces raided a stronghold of the group and killed 6 members in a gun battle on Sunday.
The Hasm movement has carried out a series of attacks on police and prosecutors in retaliation against a crackdown on Muslim forces by the administration of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
Egyptian authorities believe the group is an armed wing of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.
Security has been tightened across Egypt as the country begins 3 days of voting in a presidential election from Monday.
