U.S. is trying to get to the bottom of Iran missile test

Reuters, May 10, 2016 – The White House said it was looking into whether or not Iran had tested a medium-range ballistic missile on Monday after Iranian news agencies issued conflicting reports about whether a precision-guided weapon had been fired.
“We’re still trying to get to the bottom of what exactly transpired,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest told a briefing.
“We are aware of Iranian claims of an additional ballistic missile launch,” he said. “We’re also aware of statements from the defense minister indicating that such a launch did not take place.”

USA TODAY, May 9, 2016Iran said Monday it had conducted another ballistic missile test, claiming the missile displayed pinpoint accuracy at a range of 1,250 miles.
Brigadier General Ali Abdollahi, the Iranian military’s deputy chief of staff, told Iran’s Tasnim news agency the firing took place two weeks ago and was accurate to within 25 feet, which he described as zero error.
The nuclear deal, which became effective in January,  does not directly address missile restrictions. The U.N. Security Council lifted its ban on such testing when the deal was struck, but passed a resolution that “calls upon Iran not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles … including launches using such ballistic missile technology.”

Abdollahi declined to provide further details on the missile or the test. He said the Iranian military has allocated 10% of the nation’s defense budget to research projects.
Last month, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei stressed the need for boosting Iran’s defense capabilities, saying that negotiations without defense could still result in Iran being forced to yield to countries posing threats.
The tests in March involved two types of ballistic missiles during “Might of Velayat” military drills, Tasnim said. The missiles, Qadr-H and Qadr-F, were launched from the East Alborz Mountains, north of Iran, and hit targets on the Makran coasts to the southeast.
